Instagram and Facebook were down for a number of people across the globe on Thursday morning.
Just in time for Thanksgiving, reports of Facebook being down increased from around 130 just before 9 in the morning, to over three thousand cases after fifteen minutes, as per the website Down Detector.
At around 9:45 in the morning, there were over 7,200 reports of Facebook and Instagram being down.
On the other hand, Instagram was reported to be down from 17 cases before 9 in the morning to over 5,500 cases after 5 minutes. Just before the clock struck ten, Instagram being down had already peaked at 19,000 cases.
Accordingly, most reported cases of Facebook being down were in the Northeast United States, also in the West Coast in California. The outages were also reported to happen in Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela as well.
When people tried to log into their Facebook, an error message appears and it reads: “Facebook is down for required maintenance right now, but you should be able to get back on within a few minutes.”
The hashtag #InstagramDown was also trending at the national level before 10 in the morning, Thursday.
People were quick to turn to Twitter after the outage.
“Instagram really forcing us to socialize with family members… #instagramdown,” said one user.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp, which belongs to the other major part of Facebook’s empire of social networks was not affected by the outage.
