Since the release of Apple’s Airpods in 2016, speculations of competitors have been circulating and now is the time for it.
According to CNBC, Amazon is set to release a new Alexa-powered wireless earbud to bring the digital voice assistant to more users. Reportedly, the yet unreleased Airpod competitor has a built in fitness tracker and a better sound quality.
This soon to be announced device is reported to be Amazon’s pioneering move into the health device range.
Amazon codenamed the earbuds “Puget” and will come with a built in accelerometer that will monitor things such as calories burned, running speed and distance ran.
As for the release date, it is yet to be announced. The “Puget” will need to operate through an Apple or Android phone since it does not have a built-in cellular connectivity. Accordingly, the earbuds will operate with Alexa on the go, allowing the users to talk to the voice assistant when outdoors.
The Apple Airpod competitor from Amazon is set to be priced below $100 which is lower compared to its main competitor and will make it one of the cheapest wireless earbuds with a voice assistant.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated that the Airpods are a “runaway success” during an earning call earlier this year. This means that the Airpods have successfully offset the decline of Apple’s stocks.
Should the “Puget” pose a risk to Apple? Apple employees don’t think so. The Airpods revenue contribution to Apple is expected to rise from 2.5% this year, to 3% in 2020 and 3.5% in 2021.
Amazon is reported to have an event to showcase new products in Seattle on September 25, but it is not known if they will be announcing the Puget at that time.
